Things to Do

Winter Seaside Getaway

One of the many things these past few years has taught us is to cherish what we have even more. It has also reminded us that we never have to travel far to find a paradise worth cherishing, no matter what season we’re in. And while an Island summer will always be one for the books, the winter season brings endless beauty and wonder to explore. What better way is there to rediscover all things fun and exciting right here in our own backyard than with a PEI winter getaway? From delicious local food to outdoor winter fun, not to mention stunning seaside views, if you’re looking for a destination that has a little something for everyone, the City by the Sea is the place to be!

Vacation with a view

What are some of the best ways to stay warm and cozy this winter? Staying snuggled underneath blankets and sheets, of course! A stay at the charming Loyalist Country Inn and Conference Centre gets you ultimate comfort and relaxation while only being steps away from all the downtown fun. Their harbourfront rooms offer panoramic views of the Summerside harbour — the perfect vantage points for taking in those dazzling PEI sunsets!

A food lover’s dream

Over the years, this little city has become quite the foodie paradise, and the hardest part about planning your Summerside getaway is deciding where to eat! From an old-timey ice cream shoppe to PEI’s first all-you-can-eat sushi restaurant, and everything in between, here you’ll find a ton of local eats, international cuisine, and unique dining experiences you’ll be hard-pressed to find anywhere else on the Island.

Speaking of unique experiences, the old train station located right on the edge of the downtown core is home to Summerside’s first-ever brewery: Evermoore Brewing Co. Enjoy unique brews, toe-tapping tunes, and an elevated menu that’s not to be missed! TIP: Their Pub Pizzas are their specialty and after one bite, you’ll know why folks from all over keep coming back for more.

A visit to Summerside won’t be complete without a stop at Samuel’s Coffee House, located right on the corner of Queen and Water Street. Treat yourself to the brunch of your dreams and fuel up for a day of Island adventure!

A love for local

You won’t only find some of the most delicious food on the Island when you hit the city’s streets! Downtown Summerside is also home to many locally-owned shops, all within walking distance of each other. Take a stroll down Water St. and step into HOME by Caley Joy for some beautiful home goods all lovingly curated by Caley herself. In search of clothing for the family? The Tickle Trunk at the McNeill Mall offers a wide array of high-quality children’s clothing (perfect time to stock up for next winter), and at the Go Girl Fashions and Accessories, you’ll find an extensive collection of high-end women’s wear.

Looking for more ways to shop locally? The Summerside Farmer’s Market is located at 250 Water Street and is open every Saturday from 9am – 1pm. Whether you’re in the market for fresh, local produce or handmade artisan goods, you’ll surely want to make this a part of your weekend plans!

Fresh air, fun times

For those who love to spend time outdoors no matter the season, you’ll find beautifully maintained parks or trails all around around the city! Grab your skates and head out to The Oval at Queen Elizabeth Park — a ballpark in the summer turned outdoor ice skating rink in the winter — or take in the views of the harbour with a gentle stroll along the Baywalk boardwalk. If you’re looking for more opportunities to explore, head up west along the North Cape Coastal Drive for breathtaking views worth the drive.

When the forecast is calling for a whole lot of winter fun, a winter getaway in The City by the Sea is one that truly checks all the boxes. Quality local goods and unforgettable culinary experiences? Check. Ultimate rest and relaxation? Check. Epic winter views? Check! And with all this cold weather left to enjoy, now’s the perfect time to make the most of this magical season.
