For those that love textiles, traditional crafts and culture, a visit to Belfast Mini Mills is truly a unique and worthwhile experience.
Tucked into the pastoral landscape of Belfast, the family-run operation (eight members in total) produces advanced scaled-down textile machinery that’s shipped all over the world.
Built for processing exotic fibres such as alpaca, llama, mohair, qiviut and cashmere, the machines can be seen in action producing these high-quality finished products. You can gain a true insight and appreciation into the luxurious texture that’s churned into yarn by watching how the fibers are sorted, cleaned, and combed.
Local weavers and knitters then use the yarn to craft beautiful one-of-a-kind treasures that can be purchased at the onsite store. The store itself is worth a visit – a kaleidoscope of exotic yarn colour-coordinated from the ceiling to the floor, including kits, and other products that you simply won’t find anywhere else!
For those that want a more hands-on experience there’s the opportunity to take a needle felting or knitting class.
Classes are by appointment and held by locals with a lifetime of experience and a passion for their trade.
Learn how to knit socks, a shawl or even a sweater, and for the more advanced try your hand at lace work. For the felting classes there’s a card felting class, a quarter sheet, and a full sheet to choose from.
