To truly get a sense of the Island, you must experience the North Cape Coastal Drive. “Up West”, as it’s lovingly referred to by Islanders, is known for friendly people, coastal and pastoral beauty and delicious seafood. It’s not called “Canada’s Oyster Coast” for nothing! Rich in flavour, warmth and beauty, Western PEI is in a league all of its own.
As Islanders continue to Activate Our Island through 2020, Al Douglas took off on an adventure to North Cape to explore the epic cliffs, delicious food and stunning views. Summer may have come to a close but you don’t want to miss autumn in the West!
Treats worth the travel
It should come as no surprise that the food alone in Western PEI is worth a visit. Starting in Summerside, pop into Samuel’s Coffee House for deliciously roasted coffee and the best cookies around. As you head further west, you will work up an appetite exploring the scenic region. Backwood’s Burger is the place to stop to satisfy your appetite with delicious craft burgers, crispy fried fish and bar clam poutine. Yes, yes and yes please! Make sure to save a little room for some oysters from Valley Pearl Oysters next door The only thing that makes a meal like this better? A crisp, cold Moth Lane beer fresh from the brewery!
Time to explore
On PEI, you’re never short of opportunities to get out on the water, especially along the North Cape Coastal Drive. The Summerside Baywalk extends over 6.5km and every inch of that is water-side beauty. Catch the views from a different angle by heading out for a paddle adventure with The Paddle Shack. Explore Summerside’s most historic lighthouse and private beach on the Lighthouse Tour, or discover Holman’s Island – a land only reachable by sea!
Stay a while
Taking a day trip West is good, but waking up to coffee and a sunrise over the water is even better. Every room at the Northport Pier Inn overlooks the Cascumpec Bay and is privy to the most beautiful skies with the Cascumpec Lighthouse in the distance. As you enjoy the sights over breakfast on your private patio you will know that this is true relaxation!
Views of a lifetime
With hundreds of kilometres of shoreline beauty and waterways to discover, there’s no doubt that the views along the North Cape Coastal Drive have the ability to stop you in your tracks. The sand dunes in the distance, the windmills along the red cliffs at the tip of the Island, and the fishing docks at sunset all will have you snapping endless photos. An adventure in Western PEI never falls short of incredible sights, and trust us, those backroads are always worth taking!
As Prince Edward Island unfolds with each new season, every day holds another adventure with vibrant and changing colours and a range of fun opportunities to Activate Our Island. Is there a better way to welcome fall than to get out and explore every inch of PEI? We certainly can’t think of one!
